Autumn in Derbyshire: Events, Days Out & Things to Do in the Peak District

There’s something about autumn in the Peak District that makes it one of our favourite times of year. The trees around Chatsworth start to turn golden, the mornings feel a little crisper and the evenings are made for cosy pubs, good food and getting back somewhere warm after a day outside. There’s also plenty going on across Derbyshire, from the annual fireworks at Chatsworth to Halloween events, local attractions and the first signs of Christmas. So, if you’re thinking about a few days away at Heathy Lea this autumn, here are a few things to add to your list.
Enjoy the autumn colours at Chatsworth
Sometimes, the best thing to do is simply go for a walk. Heathy Lea sits right on the edge of the Chatsworth Estate, so there are plenty of beautiful walks to enjoy without having to get in the car. As the seasons change, the landscape around us becomes a beautiful mix of golden trees, open parkland and Peak District views.
You can walk from Heathy Lea towards Chatsworth, spend some time exploring the estate and then make your way back when you’ve had enough of the fresh air. And if you happen to finish your walk at a good country pub, even better.

Chatsworth Bonfire and Fireworks
If you’re staying with us around Halloween, the Chatsworth Bonfire and Fireworks is one to look out for.
It’s a real autumn tradition, with the bonfire, entertainment and fireworks taking place on the Chatsworth Estate as the evenings start to draw in.
There’s something quite special about seeing the fireworks against the backdrop of the estate, and it’s a lovely way to spend an evening if you’re visiting the area at the end of October. It’s a popular event, so make sure you check the Chatsworth website and book your tickets ahead of time.

Visit Matlock Bath for the Illuminations
Another long-standing Derbyshire tradition is the Matlock Bath Illuminations. The boats on the River Derwent are decorated with lights and illuminated as they make their way along the river, with fireworks on selected evenings. It makes for a fun evening out and gives you the chance to see a different part of Derbyshire after dark. Booking is essential, especially on selected firework nights.
Make the most of Halloween
October half term brings plenty of Halloween events to the area, particularly if you’re visiting with children.
There are pumpkin patches, Halloween trails, spooky storytelling and family activities at attractions across Derbyshire, as well as seasonal events at places such as Peak Rail and the National Tramway Museum.
Whether you’re after something properly spooky or just looking for something fun to do together, there’s usually plenty to choose from.
And, of course, you can always come back to Heathy Lea afterwards for a quieter evening.

Spend a day in Bakewell
A trip to Derbyshire wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Bakewell. It’s an easy place to spend a few hours, with independent shops, cafés and plenty of places to stop for lunch or a coffee. You can have a wander along the river, explore the town and, naturally, try a Bakewell pudding while you’re there.
Baslow is even closer to Heathy Lea and is another lovely spot for a wander, particularly if you want to combine a walk with lunch or a drink somewhere local. One of the things we love about staying in this part of Derbyshire is that you really don’t have to travel far to find somewhere worth exploring.
When autumn starts to feel like Christmas
By November, things start to change again as the first signs of Christmas appear around Chatsworth.
The Chatsworth Christmas Market is always a popular day out, with independent stalls, seasonal food and plenty of Christmas shopping. Then there’s Christmas at Chatsworth itself, when the house is transformed for the festive season.
If you’re staying at Heathy Lea in November or early December, it’s a lovely way to spend a day without having to travel far from your accommodation. You could even walk to Chatsworth from Heathy Lea, depending on the weather and how energetic you’re feeling.

Slow down and enjoy it
One of the things we like most about an autumn stay is that you don’t need to have every day planned.
You might spend the morning walking through the countryside, stop for lunch somewhere nearby and then head back to Heathy Lea for a quiet afternoon. Or perhaps you’ll visit Chatsworth, explore Bakewell or head out to one of the local events before coming back to relax for the evening.
There’s plenty to do, but there’s no need to rush around trying to fit everything in. Sometimes a few days of good walks, beautiful views, cosy pubs and time together is exactly what you need.
Stay at Heathy Lea this autumn
Autumn is a beautiful time to visit the Peak District, and Heathy Lea makes a lovely base for exploring the area. With the Chatsworth Estate on the doorstep and plenty of walks, villages, pubs and attractions nearby, there’s lots to enjoy without spending your whole stay in the car. And once you’ve finished exploring for the day, you can come back to Heathy Lea, put your feet up and enjoy a slower pace for a while.

If you’re thinking about an autumn break in the Peak District, we’d love to welcome you.
